It's STILL Cold!

So, this week was a short week. Not as short as last week, but hey. Monday Matthew, Lucas, and I baby-sat for my cousin's little girl, Mabry. She was over for a few hours, and we played in the basement with the toys, and when Chelsey came to get here, she was knee-deep in moonsand. It was so much fun to have a little girl around for a few hours. Lucas especially is good with her and playing nicely with her. Matthew likes to take her on the "grand tour" of the newest toys they've gotten, which he thinks she'll love when in reality...they are too boyish for her. Oh well.

Tuesday was back to school for all of us, and Pregnancy Care Center Volunteer Training for me. I almost didn't go..we had two VERY whiny, tired, little boys on the edge of Derrick's nerves. I did end up going after we decided that an EARLY bedtime was in their future and he'd only have to put up with the whining for about an hour after I left.

Wednesday we had a scheduled 2 hour delay at school so we can continue working on our Lutheran school accredidation. Derrick had church Wednesday night and the boys and I stayed home to do homework and so they could get showers.

Thursday wasn't too exciting except that I was at school until 8:30 for Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Friday, I left in the morning with Derrick telling me he was detaching from church and building something..toy room shelves...that day. It was one of the warmer days of the week, so being out in the garage building would be no big deal. Well, I come home to a VERY tired and rundown, and sick husband because he had worked TOO hard all day on moving all of our bedroom furniture out of the room, tearing out the carpet, and putting in hardwood floors. Needless to say, he'll never work that hard again. Remember...he is getting over strep and not off his antibiotic yet. He works hard a lot, but not like this, and his body was telling him to cool it! Saturday, we went to my parents' for lunch and then came home. Derrick rested up, and decided to do one more case (we have like 20 cases) of hardwood in the hallway. He is going to slowly put in the hall and do the other two bedrooms. Rome wasn't built in a day, and our floors aren't going to be hardwood in a day...a week....it will probably be about two weeks. His goal is to be done by Matthew and Lucas's birthday party....it will be done by then....because he is going to Phoenix for PLI the second week in February. We shall see!

Stay warm!

It's too Cold!!!!!

So, our week was great...lots of cancellations and delays because IT IS TOO COLD! Sometimes I think we are babies here in Central Ohio. Had we lived in Michigan, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc., the kids would be bundled up as much as possible and sent out the door for school. Oh well. Here is how it went.

Sunday night, I returned from Dallas after being at our PLI wives retreat. It was in the 70s when I arrived there, and got "cold" (the 50s) over the weekend. Still, I didn't have to wear a coat, which was AWESOME! Anyway, my flight there and home was nonstop and I arrived home to snow on Sunday night. There was quite a bit of snow on the runway, therefore I had to sit in the plane while we waited for a tow to come and push the plane to the gate. An hour later, I was finally able to get off the plane. All the way home, I prayed for a delay on Monday morning. No such luck.

Monday, I faithfully checked the news to see that we were in fact running on schedule. Off I went in a sleepy stupor to school. I can't even remember the fine details of the day because I was so tired! Tuesday, we did have a delay, but it wasn't called until I had already showered and dressed, so I went ahead off to school. Wednesday was a tad more exciting. The snow started coming! As we were leaving chapel on Wednesday, it was really snowing, and of course the kids thought we were going to have an early release. Derrick called off church Wednesday night, and sure enough, around 1:00, we were sending the kids home from school. I got the boys from latchkey, and we were out of there! As we were driving home, Lucas, in his wisdom says, "Mommy, this is the PERFECT PS2 day!" Well, yeah, I guess. They are only allowed to play on the weekend, and snow days, so he was right on that one. They settled down to play Start Wars, while I was grading papers. Not even 1/4 through my stack, I nodded off, and slept until about 5. I was SO tired!

Thursday and Friday school was cancelled due to it being too cold for school and the bus stops. I'm so thankful, so I can then stay home with the boys on these days. They are too funny! They play so nicely together, and they enjoy the free reign of the toy room. Yesterday, around lunch time, I decided to make quesadillas. As I was asking them what they wanted to drink, Matthew says, "Mommy, I 'fink' I'm not hungry." So, I thought that was really weird. He was pale, hadn't eaten since breakfast, and had some serious dark circles under his eyes. Sure enough, about an hour later, we were in the bathroom, throwing up. Oh well. He was fine after that, but laid around the rest of the day. He is SO active, that to see him laying on the couch trying to play but not being able to, I know something is wrong. Today, he is fine, and they are running around saving the world like Batman. Such imaginations. It sounds like a battleground in here. Much "storm troopers, rebel troopers," running and lots of exploding noises being made with their mouths. Such boys!

There has been much birthday talk in our house, as we are beginning to plan their 6th birthday party. They want a Transformers birthday, so it is in the works. I'm thinking a pizza buffet for dinner and of course cake.

Love the long weekend coming up! That means by Tuesday, we will have been out of school for a nice, 5 day break, thanks to the weather!

Back in the Swing of Things

Back in the swing of things...that is how I thought our week would be with getting back to school last week. However, as I sit here and reflect on it, that wasn't totally the case. Sunday, around midnight, Lucas came in to wake Derrick. He wanted to tell daddy that he couldn't sleep. In his sleepy stupor, Derrick gently offered to take Lucas back to bed and hopefullly get him back to sleep. They get to the hallway, about five steps, and Lucas belches. He then proceeds to remind us what he had for dinner off and on until about 4:30 am. Yes, that is how our "Back to School Week" started. Why he couldn't be sick over break so we didn't have to keep him home from school or have Derrick take a day off, is beyond me. Oh well. Such is life. So, Derrick puts on his "Doctor Dad" hat and proceeds to stay home with Lucas on Monday. We are so blessed to have some flexibility in Derrick's schedule. Let me just say that while he was on one of his trips to the bathroom Sunday night...I think aroud 2 am, Lucas came to the conclusion that "This is so much better when Daddy helps me." Derrick was unable to hear the comment, as he had graciously (?) offered to sleep on the couch so I could sleep in bed since I had school in the morning...with Lucas right next to me all night.

Lucas and Derrick spent Monday home, with Lucas very concerned about Matthew bringing home the work and crafts that Lucas was complaining he was missing. What a good little student! When I arrived in the door with Matthew, Lucas perked up right away....you can't say these two don't have a connection! We continued to nurse Lucas, and Tuesday he returned to school. O.k. So far so good.

We took it easy the rest of the week, and Thursday night there was much anxiousness and excitement in our house. The boys got to stay the night at Derrick's mom's since he was taking me to the airport for the PLI Wives Retreat I was going to in Dallas. With two two-hour delays this week because of weather, the need to get ready for a sub on Friday, as well as pack my own things, I was feeling a little stressed Thursday. I thought that putting in a roast would be good, since I could turn on the crock pot and let it be all day. Great idea...until dinner when Lucas, who was so craving meat and potatoes after being sick started eating...and eating...and eating. We left to go to Patty and Keith's, thinking everything was great. On our way to the airport Friday morning, Patty calls to tell us Lucas had gotten sick in the night again, this time "like a fountain." Oh heavens! He dropped me off, and scooted home to be around in case he had to pick Lucas up early. Low and behold, he did. Lucas had some slight meltdowns at school, as whenever something didn't go his way, he cried about it. Derrick came to pick him up, and his day was cut short of work again to be Doctor Dad, but this weekend he was also wearing the Mister Mom hat, as well.

Needless to say, Lucas is much better. My PLI event was wonderful, and unfortunately too short. I came back from sun and 50s to snow and 20s. Oh well. My flight was thankfully smooth and on time both going and coming home. However, we landed at 8:55 pm last night, and didn't make it to the gate until close to ten...we had to wait for a tow to come get the plane and push it to the gate. Let's just say, I could have walked faster than the tow seemed to be taking us. My hope and prayers for a weather delay didn't happen today, so I managed to get to school in a sleepy stupor to start my week. Which, by the way, started just fine. Tired, but fine.

Derrick is out with Justin tonight, it is snack time and then bedtime for the kiddos. Then, it is grading and Jon and Kate Plus 8 for me.

Good night, and I hope everyone reading this started their week well.

So, Christmas is over for us. Here is a run down of our Christmas extravaganza:

Saturday, December 20th: To my sister Kristin's and her husband Joey's condo for the Carfrey Christmas. We had brunch, opened presents, and played the Wii. Joey and Kristin gave the boys a Jeep game, as well as a steering wheel. Lindsey and I played a competitive game of tennis. I was thoroughly excited about my Multiple Blessings book by Kate Gosselin, who is on my favorite show, Jon and Kate Plus Eight! Afterwards, to my grandma Carfrey's in Grove City. Here we had a ham and other yummies. We did our traditional ornament exchange, as we are all grown up now and don't buy for each other anymore. My cousins Erin and Patrick and my Aunt Deb were there as well as my parents and sisters.

Sunday-day off

Monday, December 22: I headed out for a ladies night at my Aunt Nancy's house. Here we get together with all the cousins and thier wives for a game of dice, some food, and a gift exchange. Great fun, love seeing cousins (or my mom's cousins) that I don't see very often.

Tuesday-day off

Wednesday, December 24th: We set out around noon for Derrick's grandparents' house. His parents and siblings were there, as well. Yummy German lunch, rouladden (I think that's what it is. It is beef rolled up around a pickle), gravy, potatoes, etc. We opened presents, the boys added to their legoes collection. We played euchre and spent good time together. We all headed to church at Living Truth for the Carols and Scripture service. Got home, sprinkled reindeer food in the lawn, set out cookies for Santa, and went to bed.

Thursday, December 25th: Merry Christmas! Matthew was up at 6:30, and we did the best we could to hold him off until Lucas made an appearance about 45 mins. later. Derrick had cinnamon rolls going, and was happy to begin his 12 Days of Christmas poems he wrote for my gifts. No traditional opening for me this year. It was a short poem and clue to lead me to the next gift. He had quite the time with this....I got a digital camera, a computer, a journey necklace, a Wii fit, a Wii dance mat, and some clothes and things. The boys were all about their Jedi Math game for their Leapsters, Super Smash Brothers for the Wii, and not so into the clothes. Every time they opened clothes, they said, "But I didn't ask for clothes." Oh well. Then, around noon it was off to my grandma Mae's for the rest of the day. Yummy lunch of coke ham, pork roast, noodles, etc. This year while the little ones played with new toys, we grown ups had a horse race. We all brought toy horses, my mom and aunts laid out a race track, and by the rolls of dice we moved along. I came out the top winner. Yeah!

Friday, December 26th: Christmas at the Hursts. We were there from 10am-10 pm. This year, we played BINGO to open presents. When a number was called that was on your card, you retrieved it from under the tree and gave it to the person it was intended for. My mother-in-law numbers packages instead of labeling. Anyway, once you got "BINGO", or in this case it spelled "JESUS", you could open your stocking. It was quite the process, with breaks to eat, the boys to play, etc. They were particulary excited about their light up, create your own light sabers. Derrick and I were happy with clothes and other things we needed. Then, we all played some Wii games, as his parents made that their household gift this year.

And then it was all done. We were home to put things away, and started that on Saturday. We got much done, despite the sore throat I had coming on. As it turned out, I had a virus that was affecting my throat, and Derrick ended up taking me to the ER (cheaper than urgent care with our insurance), so they could put me on an antibiotic. I spend the rest of Sunday so out of it, that I didn't even notice him haul the desk and new computer upstairs and get it set up. Thank goodness for Grandma Patty and Grandpa Keith who came to take the boys to church so he could go in with me. He had taken that Sunday off, as we had planned to travel. Good thing we didn't!

So, that's that. We have been hanging around home, playing the Wii, getting fit on the Wii fit, and dreading the return of school. I hope you all had a great Christmas!

We are finally on Christmas break. Our months have been very busy with church adding another service on Sundays and a Wednesday night service as well. The boys are growing and changing every day. They are getting sassier, but also cuter. They are so excited about Christmas this year. They have been faithfully opening each door on their Advent calendars and counting down the days. They were shepherds/innkeepers in the Kindergarten Christams program this year. Lucas had to say, "Sorry, no rooms", and "The Lord has told us what has happened." Matthew got to say, "Sorry, no rooms. But wait! How about the stable? It's nothing too fancy, but at least it's a roof over your heads." It was very cute! One of their Kindergarten highlights this month was making gingerbread houses. Derrick and his dad were the lucky ones to go to the classroom and help Matthew and Lucas with their houses. I think Derrick and his dad were more into it than the boys were.

Matthew and Lucas really are enjoying school. I can't believe all the things they are learning. Lucas's handwriting is wonderful, and Matthew's has improved greatly since the beginning of the year. He is finally learning to take his time and write his letters legibly. He seems to have a knack for Math, too...must get that from his daddy!

This week is Crazy Christmas. All told, we have seven Christamses to go to, including our own here on Christmas morning. I am so thankful for this break. Being home with the boys is one of my favorite things! We return to school on the 5th, and on the 9th I am headed to Dallas for PLI. These next two weeks of break will be much needed rest.

Merry Christmas!
